The idea of therapy is interesting! If you are curious but new to therapy ideas we hope you will like the following introduction to three types of therapy offered at Restoring Minds Counseling.

The City of Minds: A Story of Three Wise Guides

Once upon a time, in a peaceful valley surrounded by sun-kissed hills, lay the City of Minds. The city dwellers there were just like you and me — they laughed, loved, worried, and sometimes felt lost.
In this city lived three wise guides. Each had their own way of helping city dwellers heal their hearts and untangle their thoughts. Though their styles were very different, each wise guide method had been carefully studied by scholars  throughout the ages and beyond the boarders of our City of Minds. People of the city trust these guides because the help they gave really did help  — time and again.

Our City of Minds

In our peaceful City of Minds there lives three trusted therapy guides—C.B. Taylor, Gessie, and Arty—each therapist specializing in one evidence-based therapy grounded in research and real-life results. Let’s take a look at what a session with a therapist would look like.

CBT with C.B. Taylor:

Meet our Guide Named C.B. Taylor (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
C.B. Taylor — or CBT for short — is a friendly, practical fellow who carries a sturdy mirror.
When a ccity dweller feels overwhelmed by fear or sadness, Taylor will sit them down and gently hold up his mirror.
“Look here,” he’d say. “Tell me what thoughts you see swirling around. Sometimes, our minds whisper stories that aren’t quite true, like ‘I’ll never be good enough’ or ‘Everything will go wrong.’”
Taylor helps city dwellers spot these tricky thoughts, question them, and replace them with more balanced, helpful ones.
He also encourages them to try new actions, even if they feel uncomfortable at first, because he sees that small personal experiments in daily life will change stubborn patterns, even if it takes 9 months.
City dwellers often left Taylor’s cottage saying,
“I see things clearer now. I don’t believe every thought I think — and that gives me hope.”

CBT Session Example

Scene: Emma, anxious about a big presentation, sits with Taylor.
Taylor: “What were you thinking right before you felt overwhelmed?”
Emma: “I thought, ‘I’ll definitely mess up and everyone will think I’m incompetent.’”
Taylor (scribbling): “Let’s do a thought record. Evidence for and against this thought?”
Emma (smiles): “Well, I’ve prepared thoroughly and succeeded before.”
Taylor: “Great. Now use that to craft a balanced thought—like, ‘I’ve done well before, I can do it again.’” He asks her to test it in real scenarios.
Typical Frequency: CBT usually follows a weekly schedule for 8–16 sessions, each lasting around 50 minutes.

Gestalt with Gessie:

The Guide Named Gessie Alt (Gestalt Therapy)
Down a winding path lives Gessie Alt, a warm, creative guide whose home was filled with colorful cushions and curious art. Gessie didn’t focus so much on old stories from long ago. Instead, she invited people of the city to explore their present feelings, right here and now.
“Notice what happens in your body as you talk,” she’d say. “Where do you feel that tightness? What is it trying to tell you?”
Gessie would even have city folk role-play conversations with her, speak to empty chairs as if talking to parts of themselves or imagine the object is important people in their lives. This helps the city folk discover hidden feelings or unfinished business, and often leads to powerful “aha!” moments. They’d leave her home feeling more whole and alive, saying things like,
“I just understood something about myself I never put into words before.”

Gestalt Session Example

Scene: John, burdened by unresolved feelings toward his father, meets Gessie in her welcoming studio.
Gessie: “As you talk, what do you notice in your body?”
John (closes eyes): “Tightness in my chest and clenching my fists.”
Gessie: “Let’s try the empty-chair exercise.” They role-play John speaking to his father, then switch places and respond “as the father.”
After a moment’s pause…
John (softly): “I see now he might have tried, but I never let myself feel that.”
Typical Frequency: Gestalt sessions are often weekly or biweekly, over a span of 10–20 sessions, depending on personal pacing.

ART with Arty:

Guide Named Artis (Accelerated Resolution Therapy)
Finally, on the edge of our city lives Artis, who practices Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART.
Artis is known for helping city dwellers with painful memories, nightmares, or fears that wont go away. Instead of talking endlessly about the past, Artis used gentle eye movements, guiding people to hold the troubling image in their mind and then replace it with something calmer and safer.
It almost seemed like magic — but it is grounded in careful science about how the brain processes memories.
Often, in just a few sessions, city dwellers find their old memories don’t hurt the same way anymore. They’d say,
“It’s still there, but it doesn’t make my heart race. It doesn’t make me super sad. It feels… resolved.”
Scene: Lisa struggles with lingering nightmares of a car crash.
Arty: “Hold the most distressing image in your mind while following my finger movements.”
Lisa closes her eyes; Arty guides gentle eye movements.
Arty: “Now, change the scene—add a calming blue light, distance it from you.”
They repeat this imagery replacement with eye movements.
Lisa (opening eyes): “It’s still there, but it doesn’t terrify me anymore.”
Typical Frequency: ART is usually short-term, often 1–5 sessions, with many clients seeing significant relief after just 1–3 sessions.
